The village hall is the old Finsthwaite village school located on the edge of the village adjacent to the church. The hall has a large main room and a slightly smaller room which is now the kitchen and dining area. There is ample parking and a grass garden area.
When the village school was closed in the early 70’s the village took over the use of the building, using it for village activities in the winter and hiring it out to school and scout groups in the summer, thanks to the vision of Sam Taylor, the district commissioner at the time. Letting it out for overnight group use as well as for day workshops and meetings has helped fund the upkeep of the hall ever since.
Finsthwaite is a peaceful hamlet situated near the south western shore of Lake Windermere. The village is very quiet with little traffic and no streetlights, shops, pubs etc, and is well suited to groups who want a quiet place to run a course with easy access to local walks. For those organising a group residential visit there are many things to do within walking distance. It is possible to walk to English Heritage’s Stott Park Bobbin Mill and to the lovely High Dam tarn, or through the woods to the steamers at Lakeside to take a boat ride or a steam train or to visit the Aquarium.
